Around Northern Hampshire

map1.gif

This map shows the extent of the Basingstoke and Deane District of northern Hampshire, comprising 49 civil parishes. The district itself measures just over 21 miles or 35 km from west to east, and about 18 miles or 30 km from north to south. It stands immediately in the centre of the northern region of Hampshire, and its northern boundary is also the county division line between Hampshire and Berkshire. Through the implementation of various Local Government Acts between 1929 and 1972 the boundaries of the former parish divisions were radically reformed and the new civil parishes were created in order to serve the several local communities more efficiently. The old ecclesiastical parishes remained in being, however, to provide for Anglican church services and to administer to the needs of the flock, although by the early 1950s many of these ecclesiastical parishes had amalgamated for the sake of economy.
